Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
