The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
